This
program provides an alternative means for adults who have not completed
the unit requirements for a high school diploma to obtain a high school
credential. The General Educational Development (GED) test is nationally
recognized and covers competencies in reading, mathematics, science,
social studies and writing.
Adults
wanting to take the GED examination are encouraged to enroll in the GED
preparation program. The process for this begins with prospective
students taking the Locator Test. The fee for this test is $10
cash. This test is given 3 times a week at the Adult Education
Center. The results of this test allow us to place each student in
the correct group of classes for his abilities.
Teachers
will work with you on the skills needed to pass the test. When the
student and teacher decide the student is ready, a GED practice test is
given. Students who score high enough on the practice test to
indicate that they are ready for the official GED test will be given an
application for a testing date and information they need to file the
application with the GED Testing Office in Columbia.
Students who are less than 19 years of age must submit a form signed by
the principal of the last school they attended, giving their birth date
and their last date of school attendance. This form must accompany their
application to the GED testing office and can be picked up at the Adult
Education Center.
Adults who pass the GED examination will receive a state high school
equivalency diploma. This allows students to continue their education at
a college or technical school, provided they meet the entrance
requirements. These students are also eligible to participate in
our Adult/Community Education graduation exercise, held each year.
The fee
for GED Preparation is $40.00 for 6 months of classes. The $10.00
testing fee is deducted from this fee.
